Gate News message, April 28 — Google’s Gemini app has quietly rolled out file generation capabilities, allowing users to create multiple file formats directly within conversations, including TXT, Markdown, PDF, CSV, configuration files, and more. Multiple files can be packaged into a single ZIP archive for download. The feature was discovered by users testing the app and subsequently shared on social media; Google has not made an official announcement.
Under the hood, Gemini executes code through a Python sandbox with the execution path /home/bard/. The sandbox maintains a persistent working directory, allowing files to be retained and referenced across multiple conversation turns. Users can, for example, request Gemini to generate five files in one turn, then ask it to package them into a ZIP in a subsequent turn—Gemini recognizes and processes the previously created files. Additionally, Gemini now supports direct generation of Google Docs and Google Sheets; Slides support has not yet been enabled.
Previously, Gemini’s code execution feature was limited to running Python scripts within the sandbox and returning text or Matplotlib charts, with no file export capability. This update enables Gemini to deliver code execution outputs as standalone files to users, filling a gap that competitors like Claude already possessed.

Google signed a classified AI contract with the Pentagon; hundreds of employees’ signatures in opposition were ineffective
According to foreign media, Google and the U.S. government have signed a confidential AI contract that would allow the company to support the Department of Defense’s missions with its AI models, making it a supplier of classified AI technology to the U.S. military. The contract says it can be used for legitimate government purposes, involving mission planning and weapon target targeting; however, it prohibits large-scale monitoring or autonomous weapons without human oversight, and it does not grant the right to veto combat decisions. It also requires adjustments to safety settings. More than 600 employees signed a petition opposing it and calling for a refusal; Google has not yet responded.
