Once again, the air is horrible in Mexico City and the State of Mexico, and of course, the "Double No-Drive Today" restriction is back. I've been seeing that orange alert on the air quality app for days, and I knew this was going to happen. Authorities activated the restrictions because pollution levels are very high—six days in a row without being able to breathe well.
What bothers me the most is that the "Double No-Drive Today" rule affects almost all cars. If you have a hologram 2, you can't drive; if you have a hologram 1 with a license plate ending in 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, or 0, you also can't drive. Vehicles with hologram 0 and 00, with pink stickers or license plates ending in 7 or 8, are also restricted. Even vehicles without holograms—(the old ones, new ones, foreign plates)—are subject to the same restriction as hologram 2. Basically, the "Double No-Drive Today" leaves you with no options.
As if that weren't enough, taxis are also affected from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and freight trucks are not allowed to circulate between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. All because of that anti-cyclonic current that prevents pollution from dispersing. No wind, no rain—everything stays trapped in the air.
The ozone season is to blame for all this. It starts in February and lasts until July, so get ready because the "Double No-Drive Today" restriction will be frequent in the coming months. High temperatures, intense solar radiation, and little wind are the perfect recipe for pollution to accumulate. Have you checked if your car is affected by the restrictions?
