I had a curious experience with the expensive chocolates I buy. It turns out that Profeco just analyzed 31 different products and discovered that one of the most expensive on the market isn't even real chocolate. That's right, we're paying a premium for something that doesn't even meet basic standards.
This semi-sweet chocolate being sold for 90 pesos per 100 grams has a secret: its fat isn't characteristic of cocoa. That means it technically can't be called chocolate, but it's right there on the packaging as if nothing is wrong. Profeco verified that it violates NOM-186-SSA1/SCFI-2013, the standard that specifies what is and isn't chocolate. Additionally, it contains sweeteners, so it's not even recommended for children.
The ironic part is that many of us assume that expensive chocolates are of better quality, but this study shows that's not always the case. They analyzed everything from milk chocolates to sugar-free dark chocolates, and the surprise was that some of the most costly ones have completely incorrect commercial information. So next time you see an expensive chocolate on the shelf, it might be worth checking the label carefully and seeing what kind of fat it actually contains.
