Vitalik Buterin Proposes "Duress Code" Security Solution to Protect Cryptocurrency Holders from Robbery

On March 13, news reports: Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently proposed a new personal safety solution, suggesting the use of “secret phrase trigger alarms” to enhance the security of cryptocurrency holders. The idea relies on smart devices automatically triggering an alarm mechanism that discreetly sends a distress signal to the police, reducing the likelihood of kidnapping or robbery incidents.

Vitalik Buterin stated that users can pre-set specific secret phrases on smartwatches, phones, or local home devices. When the device detects these phrases, it will automatically dial emergency services and transmit real-time location information to law enforcement within a short period. This mechanism is designed to be covert, making it difficult for criminals to determine whether an alarm has been triggered, thereby increasing the chances of victims receiving timely rescue.

In the field of digital assets, individuals holding large amounts of cryptocurrencies often face higher security risks, including robberies, extortion, and even kidnapping targeting private wallet owners. Vitalik Buterin believes that if criminals face at least a 20% chance of law enforcement arriving quickly during a robbery, the risk of committing such crimes would significantly increase, potentially leading to a noticeable decline in these offenses.

Unlike traditional surveillance or large-scale monitoring systems, this solution emphasizes proactive triggering by individuals. The alarm only activates when the victim speaks the pre-set secret phrase, which incurs lower costs in protecting citizens’ freedoms. Vitalik Buterin also pointed out that this design reduces the potential for government abuse of surveillance technology, as the system does not continuously collect or upload personal data.

Security experts believe that as the number of cryptocurrency users continues to grow, personal safety issues surrounding digital assets are increasingly gaining attention. Combining wearable devices, smart home systems, and local encryption technology for alarm solutions could become an important auxiliary tool for protecting cryptocurrency holders in the future and offer new ideas for digital asset security.
