Saudi Arabia is concerned that U.S. President Trump’s move to blockade the strait could prompt Iran to take retaliatory action and subsequently close the Strait of Mandeb. The Strait of Mandeb is a key passageway for the Red Sea and is crucial for Saudi Arabia’s daily oil exports of about 7 million barrels. Previously, Iran had disrupted oil exports of about 13 million barrels per day by attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz, driving oil prices up to more than $100. Trump imposed a blockade on Iranian ports on Monday this week. Arab officials said that Iran is putting pressure on Yemen’s Houthi forces, asking them to close the Strait of Mandeb.
