Musk: Grok is still catching up to Claude Opus 4.6, expected to get close in May and overtake in June

Gate News message, on April 12, Musk said on the X platform that xAI’s Grok model is currently still catching up to Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6, and is expected to reach nearly comparable levels in May, then catch up with or surpass it in June. Musk said: “By normal standards, that’s a short time, but in the AI field, it’s actually a long time.”

Claude Opus 4.6 is Anthropic’s flagship cutting-edge AI model released on February 5, 2026, and it is the most intelligent and most powerful version within the Claude 4 series. It is positioned as “the most capable model right now.”
