Asymmetric founder Joe McCann, a cryptocurrency hedge fund, was detained and questioned by local police after his fiancée Ashley Robinson (31) died during a vacation in Zanzibar, Tanzania. According to a Thursday report by NBC News citing a statement from Tanzanian police, Robinson was pronounced dead at a hospital on April 9. Police initially ruled it a suicide, but they are still questioning her.
Based on existing reports, on April 8, hotel staff found Robinson unconscious in her room with a belt wrapped around her neck. They immediately notified management, and she was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead the next day (April 9).
Tanzanian police said hotel staff told them that the two had had a “misunderstanding” during their stay, that they were separated, and McCann was assigned to another guest room. CBS News reported that police have temporarily seized McCann’s passport pending further handling after the results of the autopsy are released.
In an interview with NBC News, Robinson’s sister Alyssa Endres said, “None of this makes sense.” She noted that Robinson had just celebrated her birthday and had recently gotten engaged to McCann just days before her death, and that her mood before the incident was “very happy.”
The family’s public statements stand in contrast to the police’s initial suicide determination. The final classification of the case will need to wait until the autopsy results are completed and a formal ruling is made by Tanzanian authorities.
Asymmetric is a cryptocurrency hedge fund and venture capital firm founded by McCann. Reports say the fund’s performance has been severely hit this year due to long-term volatility in the crypto market, facing strong criticism from investors, and it adjusted its trading strategy in July. A few weeks before the strategy change, McCann had publicly said the fund was down about 80% year-to-date. In addition, a Solana (SOL)-centered treasury company under Asymmetric also announced its cancellation in August for unspecified reasons.
As of now, McCann has not been formally charged with any crime. He is currently detained by Zanzibari police in the capacity of a person being questioned, and police have also seized his passport while waiting for the autopsy results. Tanzanian police’s initial finding was suicide, but the investigation is still ongoing, and no final conclusion has been released.
Continuing to question the suspect and detain the passport after the initial determination is released, before investigation results are formally confirmed, is a common procedure to preserve the relevant parties’ cooperation with the investigation. The autopsy results are a key basis for confirming the manner of death; until they are released, the investigation procedures will continue.
Asymmetric is a cryptocurrency hedge fund and venture capital firm founded by McCann, active in cryptocurrency market trading and early-stage project investment. McCann has some recognition within the crypto community, but his fund faced severe performance pressure in 2025, with losses of 80% year-to-date, and a Solana treasury listing plan also fell through.
