a16z Partner: The actual payment volume for AI agents over the past 30 days is approximately $1.6 million, far below media reports.

Gate News reports that on March 12, according to PANews, a16z partner Noah Levine clarified AI proxy payment data on the X platform. He pointed out that there were reports of $24 million in AI proxy payments over the past 30 days, but after removing wash trading, the actual amount was only about $1.6 million. Levine stated that this gap reflects that even measurement infrastructure is still in its early stages. He noted that most AI payment activities are currently focused on developer tools, such as AI data platforms for websites, AI browsers, and AI image platforms. These companies accept credit card payments, but the x402 protocol allows developers or agents to try tools without a subscription. Levine emphasized that while $1.6 million is not a large amount, the infrastructure built around it is substantial, with Stripe, Cloudflare, Vercel, and others integrating x402, and Google also embedding the proxy payment protocol. These companies are betting on the future scale when agents become the default buyers.
