I looked at the statistics for the poorest countries in the world in 2025, and here’s what stands out. The poorest country by GDP per capita is South Sudan, with just $251. Next are Yemen (417), Burundi (490), and the Central African Republic (532). Almost all of them are in Africa, which is not surprising given the continent’s economic realities.

Interestingly, even among the poorest countries, there are significant differences. For example, Nigeria has $807, while the DRC has $743. But looking at Asia, the situation is also serious — Tajikistan (1432), Nepal (1458), East Timor (1491). India ranks last with $2,878, although that’s still very little for a country with such a population.

The poorest country in this ranking shows how huge the gaps are in the global economy. When you see such numbers, you realize the scale of inequality. Although these are 2025 data, the trends don’t seem to have changed much.
