I noticed an interesting situation with Polymarket — it seems that the голландское управление по азартным играм is making it increasingly difficult for prediction market platforms to operate with regulators. Just recently, the голландские власти issued a serious ultimatum.
In mid-February, the голландское управление по азартным играм ordered Adventure One, the голландское подразделение of Polymarket, to cease operations. If they do not comply, penalties will be severe — up to $840,000 per week. According to the регулятор, Adventure One was offering illegal bets on local elections without the proper license. Interestingly, регуляторы classified prediction markets specifically as bets, although this is not quite a traditional gambling category.
It turned out that голландские власти had already tried to contact the company earlier but received no response or corrections. Элла Сейсенер, the supervisor, pointed out that the компания simply игнорировала их требования.
This is not the first blow for Polymarket in recent months. Although they received approval from the американская CFTC, отдельные штаты устраивают им серьёзную проверку. It creates a funny jurisdictional situation — the chairman of the американская CFTC even criticized the штатовскую проверку, saying it undermines federal authority.
Meanwhile, in Нидерланды, something crazy is happening. A week ago, the палата представителей продвинула предложение о 36-процентном налоге на прирост капитала — and this applies to almost all liquid investments, including крипто. The funniest part is that the налог will be levied even on unrealized gains. Can you imagine?
