Just found out about this CBN thing and honestly it's kind of wild. So starting May 1 - literally next month - you can only change your BVN phone number ONE time in your entire life. After that it's locked forever. I'm not exaggerating, that's actually the rule now.
Why does this matter? Your BVN phone number is basically your banking lifeline. It's how you get OTPs for transfers, transaction alerts, everything. Lose access to it and you're basically locked out of your own money. The CBN is doing this because fraudsters have been running SIM swap scams where they change people's BVN numbers and drain accounts. Fair point on security, but the implementation feels extreme.
The thing is, phones get stolen, SIMs get deactivated, people switch networks. What happens then? There's no published exception for any of that. Legal experts are already questioning whether a one-lifetime-only rule actually complies with Nigeria's data protection laws, but no court has ruled on it yet.
So here's what you actually need to do right now: First, check if you can still receive calls and SMS on the number linked to your BVN. If not, go to your bank before May 1 and update it. You can do this at any branch with a valid ID, through USSD on some banks, or via the mobile app if your bank supports it. Also make sure your SIM registration name matches your BVN name exactly - CBN is requiring that match now, and if it doesn't, your account could get automatically deactivated.
How long does the actual change process take? Usually just a few minutes at the bank if you have your documents ready. But the point is - don't wait. You've got less than a month to figure out your phone number situation before this rule locks in permanently. This isn't something you want to procrastinate on.
