Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA details, especially with the new year coming up. Been helping my family sort this out, so thought I'd share what I learned.

So here's the thing - if you're on permanent grants like old age or disability, you can't just do everything online. You actually have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person. They'll give you the Payment Method Change Form, and you need to bring your original ID plus a recent bank statement (less than 3 months old) or a letter from your bank. Important: the account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts. After you submit, it takes about 21 working days for the bank to verify, so if you want it to work for next month's payment, get it done before the 15th.

For your cellphone number with permanent grants, you can call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office, but honestly some changes might still need you to go in person. They're pretty strict about verification.

Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's way easier because everything's online through the official portal. You go to the banking details section, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure SMS link. Click that link, enter your new bank details, and you're done. Same rule applies though - account must be in your name. For changing your phone number on SRD, you go to their contact details page, enter your ID and Application ID, put in your new number, and they'll send you a one-time PIN to confirm. Takes just a few days usually.

One heads up: there are fake websites out there pretending to be SASSA, so always make sure you're on the actual official portal when doing any banking details update. Don't fall for that. If the online thing isn't working for you, just call SASSA directly or visit an office - bit slower but way safer.

The key thing is don't wait until the last minute, especially if you need your payment to go to a new account. Get your banking details update sorted early in the month if you can.
