Just went through updating my SASSA details and honestly, the process is different depending on which grant you're on. If you're getting the SRD, it's way easier—everything happens online through their portal. You just need your ID number and they'll send you an SMS link to verify everything. That's how you change your srd banking details without leaving home.
But if you're on a permanent grant like disability or old age, it's more complicated. You actually have to go to the SASSA office in person. They make you fill out forms, bring your original ID, and you need proof of your new bank account—like a recent bank statement or a letter from the bank. The whole thing takes up to 21 days to process once they send it to the bank. One thing they're strict about: the account has to be in your name only. No joint accounts, no third-party stuff.
For your phone number, same deal. SRD users can update it online through their contact details page—they'll send you an OTP to verify. Permanent grant recipients should either call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or just visit the office. And here's a heads up: if you're changing your banking details, try to do it before the 15th of the month, otherwise it won't take effect until the next payment cycle.
There are fake websites out there claiming to help with this stuff, so make sure you're using the official SASSA portal. The toll-free line is also legit if you get stuck. Honestly, just go to the office if it's complicated—it saves you from dealing with fraudsters.
