Just looked at Pakistan's currency journey from 1947 to now and honestly, it's wild how much the rupee has depreciated over the decades. Back when the country was founded, 1 USD to PKR in 1970 was still holding steady around 4.76, pretty stable for decades actually. But then things started shifting hard from the 80s onwards. By the late 80s it jumped to over 20 PKR per dollar, and from there it just kept sliding. The 2000s saw acceleration—went from around 50 PKR in 2000 to over 80 by 2008. Then came the real pressure years. 2018-2019 was brutal, crossing 160+ PKR per dollar. 2020 hit different with 168, and by 2022-2023 it was basically in free fall hitting 286. Currently sitting around 277, which is mental when you think about it—that's roughly 84x worse than the early days. The structural issues, inflation, and external pressures really compound over time. Makes you wonder what the next decade looks like for emerging market currencies honestly.
