Have you ever wondered how many bitcoins Satoshi Nakamoto really owns? That’s a question that many in the community are curious about, and the answer is quite impressive.
Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, probably holds around 1.1 million BTC. That sounds like an astronomical sum—and it is. The man not only invented the concept but was also the first miner to create blocks. Starting from January 3, 2009, Satoshi mined over 22,000 blocks and earned more than one million bitcoins in block rewards. Interestingly, these coins are not all concentrated in a single address but are spread across about 22,000 different addresses. And here’s the crazy part: not a single one of these coins has ever been moved—except for a few test transactions for experimentation. It’s like a digital time capsule.
When translated into current figures—at today’s prices of around $67,000 per bitcoin—we’re talking about an unimaginable wealth. Satoshi disappeared from the project in 2010 and has never been seen since.
But Satoshi isn’t the only one with large bitcoin holdings. Take the Winklevoss twins: after their Facebook settlement in 2008 with Mark Zuckerberg, they invested part of their $65 million into Bitcoin. They bought about 11 million dollars worth of BTC at an average of $10 per coin back then—and today, that would be enough to make you laugh. The two probably hold around 70,000 BTC.
Tim Draper, this legendary VC, has an interesting story: he initially bought 40,000 BTC on the Mt. Gox exchange but lost everything in the legendary hack. But he wasn’t discouraged—by 2014, he had snapped up 29,656 BTC for $18.7 million.
Michael Saylor of MicroStrategy tweeted in 2020 that he personally held 17,732 BTC. As a Bitcoin bull, he’s likely added even more since then.
And then there are the big institutions: MicroStrategy with over 628,000 BTC, BlackRock with 738,000 BTC, and Grayscale with 180,000 BTC. The concentration of Bitcoin is wild when you look at it more closely.
All in all, it shows that Satoshi Nakamoto still dominates the top position in terms of how many bitcoins he has—and that early adopters are now playing in a completely different league.
