The current crushing season in Uttar Pradesh, India, faces a sugarcane supply shortage, leading to a decline in sugar production.
According to The Times of India, as the largest sugar-producing state in India, Uttar Pradesh in the 2025–26 crushing season is facing a situation in which sugar output may fall, due to a decline in the quantity of sugarcane available for crushing. Official estimates indicate that in the current season there will be a gap of about 2–3% in sugarcane supply. The main reason is that in February there were unusually high temperatures, followed by unseasonal rainfall in March. In addition, the widely grown Co-0238 sugarcane variety has suffered crop damage due to rotting disease, further exacerbating the supply shortage. An official from the Uttar Pradesh Sugar Mills Association said that as the crushing season approaches its end, the full impact will become clearer within the next 10 to 15 days.
