I just learned about a very serious incident that occurred in Caribbean waters. A Florida boat was attacked by Cuban border guards, resulting in four deaths and six injuries. The vessel, registered as FL7726SH, reportedly entered Cuban territorial waters near Cayo Falcones.
What's interesting is that the versions differ completely. According to Cuba, the boat refused to identify itself and opened fire first. From the U.S. side, a official cited by The New York Times suggests it was a civilian vessel that was part of a flotilla to evacuate family members from the island. So far, no one has officially confirmed who exactly the occupants were or what their true purpose was.
The political reaction was immediate. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier ordered an investigation into the matter in collaboration with federal authorities. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the United States is investigating, although he acknowledged reliance on the Cuban regime to clarify what happened. Vice President JD Vance was more cautious, saying they would monitor the situation but that they did not have enough details yet.
This occurs in a context of quite high bilateral tension. The episode coincides with Rubio's presence at the CARICOM Summit and comes after recent events in Venezuela that have kept the entire region on alert. What is most striking is that, so far, the identities of the victims and concrete details about the boat remain unknown beyond its registration number. Several members of Congress have already called for an urgent investigation to clarify exactly what happened in those waters.
