IPL 2026: LSG Slammed For Breaking Marsh-Markram Opening After Skipper Pant's Run-Out Vs DC
(MENAFN- AsiaNet News)
The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) management has come under fire after Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram’s opening combination was disrupted to accommodate skipper Rishabh Pant as an opener in the team’s IPL 2026 opening match against Delhi Capitals at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday, April 1.
Putting into bat first by DC captain Axar Patel, LSG were bundled out for 141 in 18.4 overs. Opener Mitchell Marsh earlier led the hosts’ innings with a knock of 35 off 28 balls, including 3 sixes and 2 fours, at a strike rate of 125. Then, Abdul Samad guided the middle order with an innings of 36 off 25 balls, including 3 fours and a six, at a strike rate of 144.00.
Apart from Marsh and Samad, none of the LSG batters made a significant contribution, as the next best performance was 15 off 16 balls by Shehbaz Ahmed in the lower order, highlighting the team’s batting collapse.

Pant’s Opening Gamble Backfired
Lucknow Super Giants management appeared to have taken a bold call to alter the opening combination by sending Rishabh Pant to open the innings, breaking the settled Marsh-Markram pair.
Despite Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh being the LSG’s most successful opening pair and the second-best overall in the last IPL season, aggregating 574 runs, including a century and 4 fifties, at an average of 47.83 in 12 matches, skipper Rishabh Pant was promoted as an opener, apparently to regain his form, which was scrutiny. However, the gamble completely backfired.
Rishabh Pant and Mitchell Marsh were looking to form a good opening partnership while steadying the LSG’s ship until the skipper’s stay at the crease was abruptly ended when Marsh’s tap deflected off Mukesh Kumar’s hand onto the stumps while Pant was backing up at the non-striker’s end.

For the second time in his IPL career, Rishabh Pant opened the innings. The last time the LSG skipper was against the Gujarat Titans in the IPL season, but scored just 21 off 18 balls, a rare outing at the top of the order that failed to yield runs. Pant’s attempt to anchor the innings again did not pay off and added to the criticism of LSG’s tactical call.
In the match against Delhi Capitals, Rishabh Pant’s opening call has once again backfired, drawing sharp criticism from fans and experts alike.
LSG Slammed for Breaking Marsh-Markram Partnership
Following Rishabh Pant’s run-out and the breaking of the team’s most successful combination of Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram from the IPL season, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) management has come under heavy fire, with fans and cricket enthusiasts on X handle (formerly Twitter) questioning the logic behind the move.
Taking to their X handles, fans and cricket enthusiasts slammed Lucknow’s decision, calling it baffling and unnecessary. Many questioned why the team disrupted the proven Marsh-Markram opening pair just to promote Rishabh Pant, calling the move short-sighted and blaming it for LSG’s early batting collapse against Delhi Capitals.
Others argued that Pant could have easily batted at No.3 while keeping the Marsh-Markram opening combination intact and criticized LSG’s overthinking of a formula that worked brilliantly in the previous season.
Why fix something that’s working?Only good thing about Lsg last season was the opening Partnership of Markram and Marsh
Has @LucknowIPL @RishabhPant17 @DrSanjivGoenka and team have gone nuts! Yes Pant may bat better as opener! But how can you break the best opening pair Marsh-Markram unbelievable! And then now your best spinner Digvesh Rathi isn’t in first 11!And now impact is used! Overconfident
Why fix something that’s working?Only good thing about Lsg last season was the opening Partnership of Markram and Marsh
Poor strategy & planning by LSG… Tinkered with settled opening pair of Marsh & Markram. Pooran should bat at number three… Risabh as usual failed again!! #LSGvsDC
There was no need to separate Markram and Marsh. Pant could’ve easily played at No.3 instead of opening!
Markram & Marsh were such a solid opening pair in the #IPL2025. Not sure whose decision it was, to disturb that & send Markram down to one down position. Doesn’t make any sense. It’s like pushing Sanju down the order to squeeze in Shubman at the top. #DCvLSG#LSGvDC#IPL
God helps those whose intentions are pure. Rishabh Pant is not capable of playing like that he came in just to take advantage of the powerplay. Last year, only positive for LSG was opening pair of Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram So why to break that twitter/L6STPgFLLp
LSG management is overthinking and fixing what was never broken with Rishabh Pant instead of Aiden Markram, sending Ayush Badoni at 4 ahead of Nicholas Pooran???Last season, Marsh, Markram & Pooran were your top performers. Now suddenly the entire batting order is… twitter/gDdO0iFlw0
Rishabh Pant disrupted the settled opening pair of Markram & Marsh, who did so well last year together just for his selflish reason scored 627 & Markram 445 last year, there was no reason to break their opening pair. Even strike rate from both of them was great with…
When Marsh and Markram opening worked for LSG last year. Pant inserted himself
LSG OPENERS IN IPL 2025:-.Mitchell Marsh - 627 runs…Aiden Markram - 445 runs + Markram being the 2nd Best Opening Pair of IPL 2025 added ~ 574 runs in Partnership at an avg of ~ 47.83. What’s the point of breaking a successful Opening pair & putting in… twitter/Cxrlv5Cc5S
Lucknow Super Giants are aiming to make a strong comeback in the IPL 2026 after they endured a disappointing campaign in the previous season, where they finished seventh in the league stage with six wins and eight losses, and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Ahead of the IPL 2026, the Lucknow franchise retained 17 players, including Mohammed Shami and Arjun Tendulkar, through trade deals with Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians, respectively, and purchased six players at the auction, completing a 23-member squad.
